“Only four months to the end of analogue TV”
Reach Out and Switch Over Week is part of the Community Outreach Digital Switchover Programme, a national initiative coordinated by The Wheel, a national umbrella body for community and voluntary organisations, in conjunction with Irish Rural Link, with funding from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.
Community and voluntary organisations are holding events to encourage people to make the switch to digital TV as part of the “Reach Out and Switch Over” week from 25th June to 1st July. They’re providing information and advice to people on how they can switch to a digital TV service before the analogue signal is turned off on 24 October.
Anyone who is still using an aerial to receive their television signal will have to take action before this date to continue receiving TV broadcasts. While most people will make the switch themselves, some people may need a helping hand from friends, relatives and neighbours. These people are most likely to be older, live in rural areas and be more isolated.
“We all know someone who may be unaware of the switchover, or uncertain about what to do; it could be an elderly relative, a neighbour living on their own or a family living in an isolated rural area. We are asking the public and local groups to reach out and help inform these people of their options. Let’s make sure that no one in Co. Wicklow is left behind on,” said Eileen Byrnes from Bray Area Partnership.
Local community and voluntary groups, clubs and associations are encouraged to get involved by distributing information and hosting their own information events. Eileen Byrnes, the Digital Outreach Champion for County Wicklow, is coordinating these efforts.
One such event during “Reach Out and Switch Over” week in Wicklow will be held at St. Kevin’s Community Centre, Blessington, Co. Wicklow who will be holding a Coffee Morning and Cake Sale on Wednesday 27th June 2012 from 10am-1pm. All welcome.
