Press Release from Simon Harris TD

Newpark School in Blackrock remains the only non-fee paying secondary school catering to the needs of Church of Ireland secondary school students from North Wicklow.

Fine Gael Wicklow TD, Simon Harris, met with parents, students and teachers from Newpark Comprehensive School at their briefing for Dáil members on Tuesday.

Deputy Harris said, “Newpark plays a vital role in educating students from North Wicklow, as is the only non-fee paying Protestant secondary school over a wide catchment area. Meeting with parents and teachers from the school confirmed for me the necessity for a new school building to be provided as soon as possible. Children are doing their Leaving Cert with buckets collecting drops of water all around them, while lab facilities for subjects such as Science are outdated and even dangerous.”

“I have raised this matter in the Dáil with the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn TD, and will continue to work with my colleagues in the Oireachtas to seek a resolution to this matter.”
