t’s been a long, hard road for the people of Greystones to reclaim some kind of ownership and even friendship with our harbour. And it ain’t over yet, of course.
When the big boys moved in with all JCBs blazing in 2008, who would have guessed that not only would we lose a Victorian landmark but the shiny new, multi-purpose, multi-million-euro marina we’d been promised in its place would suddenly sink, along with the rest of recession-hit Ireland.
By the time the summer of 2011 came blinking into view, the good people of Greystones had grown ever-so-slightly stir crazy with all the hoarding, the fencing and the great big gaping hole where the town’s beating heart used to be.
Which, when you think about it, would make Trafalgar Road sorta the aorta. But, we digress.
It was the Give Us Back Our Harbour campaigners who decided something had to be done, and on Sunday July 3rd, 2011, at 3pm, the Bucket & Spade celebration gave the people of Greystones the opportunity to have some fun by the seaside for the very first time in three years.
On the day, the crowd were entertained by the likes of Al O’Donnell (accompanied by his son, Conor), Dustin The Turkey and Phelim Drew (accompanied by his good lady wife, Sue Collins), as well as Tom Fortune‘s forever-young brown hair and Darragh Flynn‘s virgin white legs – all this after the angry had gathered on the seafront for a quick bout of banner waving, of course.
Digging through the GG archives – which is a regular past time at GG; so, watch out – we happened upon these great shots by our no.1 roving photographer, John McGowan.
So, brace yourself for some incredibly good-looking people below…
