Press Release from Simon Harris TD

Submissions sought on whether social insurance should be extended to cover the self-employed

Fine Gael Wicklow TD, Simon Harris, has urged self-employed people across Wicklow to take part in the new consultation on extending social insurance cover to the self-employed. This is being conducted by the Advisory Group on Tax and Social Welfare established by the Department of Social Protection.

Deputy Harris said, “I would urge self-employed people across Wicklow to write into the group and have their opinions on this important matter considered.  It is absolutely farcical that our current social welfare system does not provide supports for self-employed people who find themselves falling on hard times. Self-employed people make a very valuable contribution to our society, paying taxes, and often going on to create more jobs. They should have the option of opting in to a system of social insurance which will protect them and their families.”

“The group will be considering whether such cover for self-employed people is desirable, feasible and financially viable. Submissions can be made to AdvisoryGroup@welfare.ie and the full submission guidelines are available from my office.”
