ou gotta hand it to that John Hayes fella – he certainly knows how to give a tree a good afterlife…
His latest creation before cremation popped up our radar earlier this week, when it was reckoned that John’s latest tree transformation of a hand grasping an apple was Greystones giving a cheeky finger to the computer giant’s current tax bill woes here in Ireland.
Not the case.
Turns out the timing was purely coincidental, John – who has reconstructed many a dying tree into a work of art with his Special Branch Carvings outfit – having long ago discussed just how to turn this particular Burnaby topiary into a top family monument.
And given that the grounds this 130-year-old, 30-foot old tree stands on was once a much-loved family orchard, it was decided that a dirty big hand holding a dirty big apple would be a sweet nod to a happy, cider-fueled childhood.
We would tell you exactly where this wonderful giant hand is, but happening upon such beauty is really part of the kick. As the local children have discovered, bringing down energy-boosting chocolate bars for John and his workmate (too shy to appear here, or maybe he’s just on the dole?), having decided that the sculpture is The BFG’s hand.
So, let’s just say it’s about a five-minute walk from Burnaby Park. And it’s right out front, overlooking the road – so, you can’t miss it.
If you’re having trouble finding it though, just follow that grinning, chuckling Bill Gates…Â
