Having first surfaced in the mid-19th century, the sea shanty started out as work songs for sailors and those slaving away on merchant sailing vessels.
Over the decades, the definition has loosened, as land dwellers took up the mantle of the maritime musical meanderings.
Most recently, Johnny Depp got some of his famous friends to contribute to not one but two double-CDs of sea shanties, with the likes of Shane MacGowan, Nick Cave, John C. Reilly, Bryan Ferry and Richard Thompson amongst those contributing to the Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs And Chanteys.
