Winter Daydreams

I wish
I was the chubby grey cat
curled up tight, dozing
in warm sunshine,
watching behind the flowerpots,
as a garden symphony unfolds.

I wish
I was the scarlet rose hips,
high above the trellis,
eying the changing colours of the day,
listening
to warm whispers from the trees,
eaves dropping
on the secrets of rose buds,
the bitter woes of sobbing poppies,
gossiping
with hot pink hibiscus,
on the dark underworld of leaves.

I wish
I was a striped bumble bee
whizzing from lilac to lavender,
or a fluttering butterfly
sipping on sweet nectar,
or a fat spider,
weaving silken webs
spinning trapped lives to death.

How nice it is
to daydream,
looking out
on a barren garden,
on a slate winter’s day.

I am Irish, I was born in Tramore, Co. Waterford and presently live in Greystones, Co. Wicklow. For many years, I have lived in Europe, mainly in Holland.  I still move between Ireland and our home in Trier, Germany due to my husband’s work. I am married 30 years and have two adult children who have flown the nest. After years of working in the Financial Sector, I retired early and am writing one year now. I really enjoy it. I paint watercolour and acrylic and I have found incredible joy in creativity. I am a published Haiku poet with the Irish Haiku Society and Haiku Ireland. I have had a number of standard poems published in local and foreign poetry anthologies, journals, e-zines and online forums.
