e reckon we might just have stumbled upon Greystones’ best kept secret this afternoon…
It’s a corner shop, Jim, but not quite as we know it.
Having recently been taken over by brothers Hugh and Dan O’Neill – after their dad, Dan Snr, decided to hang up his apron – the Centra store up at Eden Gate has a ridiculous amount of goodies. And all of them carefully selected by the Brothers Grin.
From hot dinners to hurley sticks, from greeting cards and gorgeous Bray pudding to Frank And Honest takeaway coffee to go with yourRTE Guide, from seabass fillets with ginger marinade to smooth craft beers and fancy pants wines, sure, the O’Neill brothers have your every need, whim and twisted desire covered.
Including, of course, the oul’ gas cylinder, the full-to-bursting sambos from the deli counter, the healthy salads to go alongside Murphy’s ice cream, and sure, where else would you be going…?
“It was really during the lockdowns that we realised just how strong the sense of community in Greystones is,” says Dan. “It felt like a jump back in time, as people pulled together, and just helped one another…”
“To the point that we feel like we know pretty much everyone who comes through the door,” nods Hugh. “It means we get to hear about what people like, and what they need, and we then try our darndest to go find it for them.”
That the O’Neills have also made a point of putting as many Irish-made and locally-produced goodies on their shelves has has an impact too.
“People are always happy to try something new when they know it’s literally made by someone up the road,” continues Hugh. “That goes for ice cream, for craft beer, for chocolates, for everything…”
Open from 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 9pm on Saturday and Sunday, you can find out for yourself what all the O’Neill brothers fuss is about by swinging down to their groovy Eden Gate HQ. Today.
“We’re basically bringing back the corner shop,” finishes Dan. “Just one that has the range of a small village square market…”
