t was just over 5 years ago that buddies Sharon Doyle and Jamie Mullen decided to take their love of gymnastic one step further, and open up their own school.

Today’s GymSTART Awards ceremony was a clear sign of not only just how smart they were, but how far they’ve come.

There were 400 awards handed out this afternoon at Sugarloaf Gymnastics’ great big Kilcoole HQ, and there’s still four more days of medals and certificates to be handed out. By Friday, 750 kids will have something new to hang on their bedroom walls.

The joy on the kids’ faces today was a reflection too of not only the joy of gymnastics but of just how well Sharon and Jamie have passed on their love for the sport.

And gymnastics isn’t only beneficial to the young ‘uns. For those keen to keep mind and body fit, Jamie – who first got the bug at the age of five – is still able to do those splits. Even though she’s, you know, really, really old.

With this year’s summer camp now open for business, it’s been pretty much non-stop for Sugarloaf Gymnastics for the past few months.

In fact, given the sea of happy young faces here today, it’s obvious that the last 5 years have been pretty non-stop for Sharon and Jamie. How else to explain the Gymnastics Ireland Club Governance Award 2017…?

We managed to grab the latter for five minutes between awards ceremonies today to find out more about those early years, the beauty and benefits of gymnastics, and how the next generation are going to be fitter, stronger, faster and cooler than us…
