e’re big fans of Mary-Kate Hardy’s work here at GG HQ…
Having spoken to the Greystones artist when she opened her exhibition at The Mini-Theatre back in April, when it came to putting Ronnie Drew’s great, big, beautiful head on Theatre Lane for the upcoming Big Birthday Bash on September 16th, well, we didn’t have to think twice about who to ask.
With both her skills as a portrait artist and her knack for turning shop windows into kaleidscopic wonders with her Fenestrations business, converting Theatre Lane into a shrine to the Dubliners’ icon who spent the bulk of his remarkable life just down around the corner was easy, verging on peasy, for Mary-Kate.
With a blue-print image of Ronnie created by Temple Bar artist collective The Icon Factory, this portrait could very well become Greystones’ Che Guevara poster. There aren’t many faces out there that, when reduced to one or two primary colours, are still instantly recognisable.
With a little help from Ronnie’s kids, Phelim and Cliodhna, we’ll be compiling a few Greystones memories of Ronnie here at the Guide – there’ll be a post later this evening, in fact – given that this great man was as noted for his quick wit as he was for his sharp grumpiness.
In the meantime, we grabbed Mary-Kate just as she was beginning her Ronnie Drew window mural, which you can now catch on Theatre Lane…
