Green is the new orange…
rriving down de town just 10 minutes before this year’s Paddy’s Day Parade was due to kick off, it seemed as though, out of the town’s 18,347 population, about 18,327
had decided to stay in bed.
Jaysus, there was hardly anyone out on the main street.
Perhaps it was the nasty weather forecast, with rain predicted, and
maybe even some snow. It was certainly cold enough for the latter, but the clouds didn’t leak, and, bejiggers, the sun even came out for a while.
There was also the little matter of Ireland playing England at Twickenham this afternoon for a possible Grand Slam title, so quite a few in the town might have been busy praying.
They missed a short and sweet hooley. Congrats to all the parade winners on the day – Most Original Entry went to St Patrick’s Church, Best Musical Entry went to the Tallaght Marching Band, Best Social/Cultural Entry went to Greystones Educate Together NS, Best Sports to Greystones Taekwon-Do, Best Commercial to Ultima Oil (the new Noble’s trucks, clearly), Best Traditional Irish to Dunphy School of Irish Dancing, Most Entertaining Entry went to Stacksteads Boomerang Band (who promised they’d be back next year), Most Colourful to Wicklow Triple A
Alliance, Best Uniformed Organisation to Holyhead Sea Cadets, Most Topical to Irish Girl Guides and Overall Parade Winner was Greystones Community National School.
Winner of this year’s Best Window Display was Select Interiors. Mainly
because they were just about the only Greystones shop to bother their arse.
We have over 500 proper pics from the great John McGowan’s right about here, a 589-piece companion piece to these crappy shots, and one very crappy video walk right through the parade, from start to finish.
For all you lazy fecks who didn’t get out of bed.
