hen we last visited Paul and his Boogie Bounce crew down at the Greystones Lawn Tennis Club, their disco nights had just begun.
With the use of swirling lights and thumping dance tunes, Paul’s classes did the Trojan Horse trick of hiding cardio and core strength fitness inside a whole lotta mini-trampoline fun.
“It’s basically people having a party, with friends, dancing together in the flashing lights,” says Paul as Monday’s class gets set to boogie on down. And up. And down. “Compare that to the typical large, floor-to-ceiling gym window facing out to a car park, and you can see why there’s a lot more happy, laughing people here.”
Even through lockdown, Paul maintained that sense of a workout disguised as a big night out, linking up with his regulars on Zoom. But everyone is clearly glad to be back in the room since January, having moved to the ground floor of the tennis club for a bigger space, and some welcome air conditioning for the summer months ahead.
“Like most people, I was pretty reluctant about joining any kind of fitness group,” says Cathy Geoghegan, taking in some sun before the music starts, “but this class just made me feel so, so good, right from the start. And as much as the workout feels great over the hour, just as important is the kick of meeting up with your mates and just having a disco, basically…”
With a new special of 8 classes for €65, Paul says the door is always open for anyone who wants to give Boogie Bounce a try. “The cool thing is,” he says, “anyone can use a mini-trampoline.
“It’s all about thrill rather than skill…”
Kicking off every Monday and Thursday at 7pm down in the Greystones Lawn Tennis Club, you can find out more about Boogie Bounce here, hit that 8-class special here, and go book yourself a class or two right over here.
