aving honed his DJ craft in Berlin for the last few years, Mark Flynn has now set out to get his hometown under his grooves.
Going by the moniker of The Drifter, his new dance party nights of soul, funk, disco, house and whatever tickles your feet have already started to fill the dancefloor at The Hot Spot.
Which is why the bould and the beautiful Ailbhe has invited Mark along once again on Friday, August 12th, with special guest David Kitt. Which, eh, has been postponed at the 11th hour.
Let’s just hope he makes it back from Barcelona’s Nitsa Club this coming weekend, DJing alongside Mano Le Tough, Baikal and Lil’ Dave.
In the meantime, we asked Mark to go back to his music roots and reveal the songs that can make him break down and cry…
I’ve always been big into music. Listening, singing, collecting, playing, DJing.
I was in choirs and bands in my early years, but then got the DJ bug in College while going out in Dublin. A few years later I moved to Berlin to pursue a career in music. Luckily it paid off and I’ve enjoyed getting to travel DJing for the last number of years.
Of course, since lockdown touring has slowed down but it’s starting to pick back up again. In truth, the last 2 years have been a good time to reflect and I think we need to build more local electronic music scenes around the country and go from there. That is why I’ve started Set Adrift…
It was tougher than I thought to pick just 10 songs that that have really moved me down the years. Which is why I had to squeeze in a few extras…
Otis Redding Try A Little Tenderness That vocal! That build-up!
Luke Kelly Raglan Road Hits us all. What a delivery.
Paul Simon Graceland The groove, the bass, the guitar melody. That verse around ‘Losing love is like a window in your heart‘…
Neil Young Harvest Moon A perfect song. The mood, the sound, the lyrics, the feel. Perfection.
This Mortal Coil Song To The Siren Hauntingly beautiful. One of the best covers ever.
Radiohead Creep Reminds me of the Gaeltacht, when I first heard it. Changed my life.
The Prodigy No Good (Start The Dance) Lautrex, The Prodigy walk. You know what I’m talking about…
Depeche Mode Enjoy The Silence All the elements. Beat, production, vocal, chorus. Top of their game.
Brian Eno, John Cale Spinning Away What a tune. Brian Eno, genius.
Blur Out Of Time Beautiful haunting tune. One of Damon Albarn’s finest.
Nils Frahm Says Stunning swell. Incredible ending.
