“As a nation, we have lost a huge amount of our old forests and this has resulted in a depleted ecosystem.
“To put this in context, I was recently told by a forester that there is currently no forest in Wicklow that is a healthy and growing state. Unfortunately, they are all moribund, as the level of invasive deer in the county means that all new growth within a forest is quickly eaten and this impedes the natural growth cycle of a forest.
“To this end, I also asked NPWS to look at installing an exclosure at the Glen of the Downs, that would keep out grazing deer and give the woods an opportunity to regenerate.
