atest press release from Jennifer Whitmore TD, issued on Friday, June 18th 2021…
Social Democrats TD for Wicklow Jennifer Whitmore has called out against the government for voting against Just Transition amendments during the Dáil debate on the new Climate Action Bill last week.
The spokesperson for Climate Action and biodiversity said, “It is very disappointing that on many different occasions the Government including Green Party TDs voted down my Just Transition amendments and those of other TDs.
“Just Transition is about bringing everyone along with us on our journey to a zero-carbon economy, most of all those who are vulnerable to the effects of climate change and the effects of our transition to a greener economy. Those on low income or specific sectors are already affected by changes being brought in by climate action policies and they need to be part of the conversation.

“For that reason, I met with farmers from Wicklow last week where we discussed these issues and the need for greater involvement of all sectors. A Just Transition applies to them too but this has been largely lost on the Greens.
“The most important thing to remember is that while we have the targets in place what is equally important is how we meet those targets. My Just Transition amendments would’ve given the government a direction on a fair and just approach to meeting our climate action targets.
“My role now is to hold the government to account and make sure the implementation is done properly and fairly and I will continue to pursue this in my work in the Dáil,” concludes Whitmore.
