ress release from Cllr Mags Crean, issued on Wednesday, February 24th 2021…
At last night’s monthly Greystones Municipal District Council meeting, there was a call on Government to allow a CETA debate.
Independent councillors Tom Fortune and Mags Crean proposed that Greystones Municipal District Council call on the Government to allow a full, open and democratic debate and Dáil vote on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.
Councillors unanimously supported the motion, adding Greystones Municipal District to a growing list of local councils raising the need for wider debate on this critical issue.
Speaking on the motion, Cllr. Crean remarked, “This is a free trade deal between the EU and Canada but most of the trade aspects are already in operation. The key issue is ratifying this deal without proper scrutiny as there is a serious concern with the provision for settling disputes between international companies and national governments.”
Cllr. Fortune added that “this is not an abstract concern as companies have claimed for damages through other trade deals. A negative impact on national public finances trickles down into the community where it leads to cuts in local services.
“This deal needs proper scrutiny.”
