Cosmic dancer Emma Fitzgerald has been in touch about her latest piece, which will debut at the Wicklow Screendance Laboratory 2018 this Friday.
Inspired by those old railway line columns on the North Beach, Emma’s latest modern dance piece is entitled Hannah’s Prayer.
And why the frick was it called Hannah’s Prayer, I hear you shout…?
Take it away, Emma…
I made this bijoux dance film especially for Wicklow Screendance Lab 2018 during the breezy and balmy Greystones summer. The piece is inspired by the Old Testament story of Hannah’s confrontation with a priest who mistakenly assumes she is drunk because she is praying so fervently in the temple. Without missing a beat, Hannah simply tells him that she is ‘pouring out her soul before the Lord.’
Her straightforwardness and courage in the face of this dismissive criticism struck me as inspiring. I spent the summer dancing on the North Beach attempting to pour out my own soul before the lord, seagulls, tourists, seals, dog walkers, dogs and whoever was passing by, and I eventually came up with this dance.
I will be performing the live version of the dance during a free Salon at Perfect Theatre Studios on Friday 17th October and talking about the difference between choreographing and performing for camera and for a live audience. There will be many other talented choreographers and filmmakers at this event, including Tara Brandel, Steve Woods, Sinéad Keogh, Ingrid Nachtstern and Saoirse Doyle, and guest artists from far flung locations such as Israel, Finland and the Netherlands!
