The Department Of Education today released a statement in regarding the ongoing accommodation issues for Greystones Community College.
Acknowledging the ongoing legal action against Western Building Systems over the failed opening of Greystones National School, the Department also commended the management of the school – and ‘its entire school community’ – for setting up temporary shop in the Greystones Lawn Tennis Club.
Who, we hear from a guy who knows a man who has an all-knowing cat, is charging quite a few thousand a month for the privilege.
Here’s today’s press release in full…
Greystones Community College
Senior Department officials met with Kildare Wicklow ETB (KWETB) and Greystones Community College on Wednesday, 23rd September to discuss the schools current arrangements and the immediate and future accommodation requirements for the school.
The Department has agreed to look at all potential options in the area in the short and medium term ahead of the schools move to its designated permanent site in Charlesland, Greystones. This will include the provision of appropriate temporary accommodation, including specialist rooms, as quickly as possible as the current school year progresses.
The Department will also meet shortly with KWETB and Greystones Community National School to discuss that schools immediate accommodation requirements.
It had been the intention to open the Community College in the newly constructed Community National School building for September 2020 but this has not proved possible.
Greystones Community College opened its doors to 64 first year students on Friday August 28th 2020 in Greystones Lawn Tennis Club with the support of the Department and KWETB. It shows great credit to the management of the school and its entire school community in preparing the accommodation for the school’s opening in these particularly difficult circumstances.
The building project to deliver a new 1,000 pupil school for Greystones Community College is planned for the designated post primary site at Charlesland.
The Department is committed to delivering this site for the new post primary school for the Greystones and Kilcoole area of County Wicklow and work is ongoing to achieve this as soon as possible.
With regard to the matters which have impacted the handover of the Greystones Community National School building in advance of the current school year, the Department is taking appropriate steps to ensure that it is completely satisfied that the building is fit for handover prior to accepting it. There is currently an engagement underway between the Department and the Contractor in this regard under the contract.
Reacting to today’s press release, Stephen Donnelly TD said, “The predicament of the GCC students who are having to use Greystones Tennis Club is not sustainable. I know their lease is up there on October 31st and the school need additional facilities to be able to offer a full curriculum.
“We will be pushing the Department to do everything they can to facilitate Greystones Community College as soon as possible and to get the issues with the new school building resolved so Greystones Community National School can finally leave the rugby club.”
