ray’s mighty Ms Taylor has won – and defended – so many titles by now, it’s actually easy to miss one.
Such as May 1st battle Natasha Jonas at the Manchester Arena, Katie having to fight hard to retain her WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight titles.
As with her London 2012 bout against Jonas, Taylor was triumphantonce again, later saying of the thrilling 10-round affair, “It was probably a bit too exciting for my liking. It was definitely a toe-to-toe battle“.
After so many equally thrilling fights, and so, so many world titles, it’s understandable that her hometown doesn’t stop the traffic for this rockin’ woman each and every time the ref lifts Taylor’s arm up into the air. On the world stage though, the Bray fighter is heading steadily towards iconic status.
Which may explain why Katie Taylor has now trademarked her name and signature.
Naturally, no one objected to the application, and it will mean that we may just be seeing that famous face on books, bandanas, boxing gloves, bedsheets and beyond.
Not sure if that copyright stretches to murals, but, for now, a fine one in Katie’s honour has just been painted outside the Peadar Browns pub on Clanbrassil Street. It shows the fighter holding those world title belts with the words ‘Only The Strongest Shoulders Can Carry The Hopes Of A Nation‘ beside her.
The man behind the brush, Tallaght-based artist Geoff Tracey, said of Taylor, “I truly believe this woman is the greatest athlete our country has ever produced, and she is such an important role model to us all.” The woman of the hour responded to the mural by commenting, “I love it! Thanks so much guys, so honoured!“.
Turning 35 in July, and now with her professional record standing at 18-0, Taylor deserves pretty much every accolade known to man, woman or beast.
And come Christmas, we’ll be sporting our Katie Taylor jim-jams and matching hot chocolate mug with pride.
