Latest press release from Simon Harris TD, issued on Friday, February 9th 2018…
Minister Harris has received confirmation from the HSE that Sunbeam House Services have put five staff on leave as a result of allegations received Friday 26 January.
Minister Harris understands that the allegations were considered by senior staff, including the SHS’s internal safeguarding team, and the Gardaí were informed that day. The HSE has confirmed to Minister Harris that they are fully informed and the appropriate safeguarding plans are in place for the five residents concerned. HIQA has also been fully notified
Speaking on the news, Minister Simon Harris said, “This is obviously very concerning and distressing however I must welcome the swift action taken on receipt of the allegations. Wicklow people will be aware that there have previously been issues with the complaints procedure and the handling of allegations in SHS. The new procedures seem to have worked properly.”
Minister Harris, working with the SHS Family Advocacy Group has ensured that an investigation (the Jeyes Report) was conducted into issues of concern highlighted by families. An action plan is currently being implemented to ensure all complaints and safeguarding issues are handled correctly as a result of the Jeyes report.
The HSE has confirmed:
SHS will be conducting a full investigation into the matter as soon as this can commence without prejudice to Garda enquiries, which are ongoing.
The HSE is working closely with Sunbeam House Services to ensure the continued safeguarding of all residents concerned.
Minister Harris has supported the SHS families throughout this process and continues to work with the SHS Family Advocacy Group to ensure all actions identified by the Jeyes report alert. The Minister was also eager to acknowledge that many excellent people work in Sunbeam and he regularly hears this from families.
“It is important that this organisation receives the attention and support it requires so that clients receive the best possible service and so that good and committed staff can work in a strong organisation.”
