Delgany Adopts #2minutesStreetCleanJuly 25, 2018
Young Eithne Walsh from the Go Girls running and fitness group has been in touch once again about their exciting new classes.
Having proven a major success last year, these girls-only classes are aimed at young girls who want to stay fit and healthy.
And maybe even take a break from their phones for an hour or two.
Happening every Saturday morning at the Greystones Tennis Club, from 11am to 12.30pm, here’s the lowdown…
Go Girls is a unique girls-only, running and fitness class for 10- to 13-year-olds which teaches core strength, fitness and body confidence in a non-competitive environment.
The group was started in Wicklow Town by Eithne and Vicky, two Athletics Ireland coaches, and mothers of daughters, who were concerned at the increased dropout rates of girls in sport once they hit secondary school. Go Girls is their solution, and it works.
Did you know that, in Ireland’s 4th classes, the number of overweight girls stands at 24.8%, compared to 14.5% of boys? And that, by the age of 13, one in two girls will have given up sport completely, with 47% of those saying their main reason for quitting was that their friends weren’t playing?
By showing these young girls how to enjoy physical exercise on their own terms, then they will continue to stay involved in sport. Often it is when the sports get competitive that girls lose interest – maintaining the balance between enjoyment and exercise is the key. This is what Go Girls does, while increasing their body confidence at the same time. At the end of each term, the group run a 2km/5km park run.
Based on its massive success in Wicklow, Go Girls are now firmly established in Greystones too, with the latest classes taking place at Greystones Tennis Club from 11am to 12.30pm every Saturday morning. Our first 10-week course starts on Saturday, January 19th, and the cost is €75 for the full 10 weeks.
