oung Vicky O’Connell from the Go Girls running and fitness group has been in touch once again about their latest classes.
Having proven a major success around these here parts, these girls-only classes are aimed at both 10 to 14-year-olds and 13 to 16-year-olds who want to stay fit and healthy.
And maybe even take a break from their phones for an hour or two.
Running in June and July in both Greystones and Wicklow Town, the younger girls have a summer camp from July 25th to the 28th, whilst the older girls have their fitness camp from June 20th to the 23rd.
And all of these camps are in Greystones from 10am to 12pm and then Wicklow Town from 1pm to 3pm. Because it’s always good to have choice.
Now, time for some background…
Go Girls is a unique girls-only, running and fitness class for 10- to 16-year-olds which teaches core strength, fitness and body confidence in a non-competitive environment.
The group was started in Wicklow Town by Eithne and Vicky, two Athletics Ireland coaches, and mothers of daughters, who were concerned at the increased dropout rates of girls in sport once they hit secondary school. Go Girls is their solution, and it works.
Did you know that, in Ireland’s 4th classes, the number of overweight girls stands at 24.8%, compared to 14.5% of boys? And that, by the age of 13, one in two girls will have given up sport completely, with 47% of those saying their main reason for quitting was that their friends weren’t playing?
By showing these young girls how to enjoy physical exercise on their own terms, then they will continue to stay involved in sport. Often it is when the sports get competitive that girls lose interest – maintaining the balance between enjoyment and exercise is the key. This is what Go Girls does, while increasing their body confidence at the same time. At the end of each term, the group run a 2km/5km park run.
Based on its massive success in adding new venues, Go Girls are now firmly established in Greystones, and Wicklow Town, with their new summer camps taking place in both June and July, and for girls 10-14yrs and 13-16yrs.
You can book the July camp here and the June camp here.
