he first thing that strikes you when you drive up the short twist of a lane to HuB13 is how beautiful the building is.
Part of the O’Toole family farm – which has been working this particular Newcastle patch since the 1870s – this grand old outhouse is about to take a leap into the 21st century.
Yep, step inside this former sawmill, and you’ll find a whole different kind of cutting edge.
With brave and smart souls such as Andrea Splendoriand Matt Wilson having made moves in this direction over the past few years, Huw O’Toole has finally open our first shared office and workshop space. Phase 1 of HuB13 has seen the building totally rewired, re-glazed, re-insulated and fitted with new alarms and detection, plus 1GB fibre optic broadband with high-speed wifi and dedicated hard-wired data connections.
Phases 2 and 3 most probably involve Elon Musk at some point, we reckon.
The place is also damn cosy, of course, with its own kitchen, BBQ porch and communal hangouts aplenty alongside all those all-important work spaces and meeting rooms.
But hey, enough of our yakking. We swung over to HuB13 this wet and damp afternoon to find out how a lightbulb moment whilst stuck in heavy traffic finally came to light…
