Days of football agony and ecstasy were recalled last night at Greystones Rugby Club when two of the country’s most famous footballers came to town.
Having made the transition to professional pundits together over the last few decades, Liam Brady and Johnny Giles were very much in their comfort zone last night as Fintan Drury took them back through their many years experience both on and off the pitch.
The night was dubbed Raising The Stand, being a fundraiser to install a foundation 30-seater all-weather stand down at the Greystones United Athletic Football Club’s Woodlands grounds.
Can’t have all those lovely soccer mums getting soaking wet, now can we?
The ticketed event was, unsurprisingly, a sell-out, €50 getting you a two-course meal and two footballing legends having a good oul’ natter.
Even if, at times, Johnny Giles looked as though a good oul’ nap would have suited him far better.
Here’s de lowdown from GUAFC…
Over €11,000 was raised the other night at the Raise the Stand event.
Liam Brady and Johnny Giles were in great form as the they were interviewed about their lives and footballing careers by Fintan Drury. We really appreciate the guys generosity in supporting our fundraising event.
It’s a far cry from the start of Liam Brady’s career when he said that his mother was offered a washing machine as an inducement from Manchester United when he instead wanted to go to Arsenal. Needless to say he passed on the washing machine. Johnny was in great form also and the two guys discussed their intertwined careers as Johnny gave Liam his first international cap. Johnny shared stories from his time under Matt Busby, playing alongside Nobby Stiles (his brother-in-law) and many great times.
A great night was had by all. We expect construction of the new stands alongside at Woodlands to start shortly.
