he one good thing about lockdown has been the chance to really go and explore new sensations.
For Lisa Brady, it was during a search for a way to exercise that didn’t involve, well, exercise that brought her to Adele dancing like a loon.
And then Kate Hudson, doing the Funky Chicken. And over there, working up a royal sweat to The Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight, it’s yer one, Reese Witherspoon.
Lisa had stumbled across Plyojam, the dance fitness craze currently sweeping America onto its feet. Taking the fine science of plyometrics (short, sharp, passionate training) and putting it on the dancefloor with hip-hop moves and retro grooves, as their slogan goes, you train like an athlete, dance like a pop star.
“I was hooked from the very first,” says Lisa today when we meet up at Bray’s iconic seafront bandstand. “The fact that it was for everyone, not just skinny models, helped too. The face of Plyojam is Stacey Beaman, a plus-size fitness instructor, and she keeps it simple, putting the fun front and centre. Being able to just bust some moves – as they say on the street – to songs that you love, well, how could I resist…?”
Lisa loved Plyojam so much that she decided to find out if the craze had made it all the way from the US of A to Planet Éire yet, jumping into their training course soon after. And that’s when Groovefit was born, Lisa’s online classes quickly filling up with happy faces and shaking booties as the likes of irelandam and Dermot & Dave on TodayFM had her round their gaff to explain what the heck this brand new dance sensation was all about.
“Doing the online classes has been great,” says Lisa, “but I’m so, so ready now to take onto a studio dancefloor. Which is why we’ve set up our first in-the-flesh get together on October 30th at the Fegan Dance Academy in Bray. At 11am, we’re all just going to dance all our lockdown blues away for an hour. We’re also going to burn, baby, burn a whole lot of calories…”
Just €10 for the session, and you can bring a friend for free, you can join this Saturday’s Groovefit party righthere.
In the meantime, we decided to find out a little more about putting the fun back into funky…
