hen we learnt this morning that there was a 16-year-old Greystones girl who was a three-time All Ireland Champion in the groovy world of boxing, we reckoned we must have found ourselves one serious Katie Taylor fan.
When we learn that this young Greystonian was also a three-time Leinster Champion and a five-time Intercounty Champion, well, we reckoned this pugnacious pugilist might even be Katie Taylor’s #1 fan.
Well, we was wrong. Very wrong.
Turns out Ms Rock didn’t have to head all the way over Bray Head to fall in love with boxing. Kaci’s inspiration was far, far closer to home, her dad, Jim, being the only Irish professional boxer to have held the Irish title at four different weights divisions. Is it any wonder that his little girl, tagging along from the age of four to daddy’s training sessions, might just want to follow in his Ali shuffle…?
“I would put on his gloves,” says Kaci today, thinking back to those childhood visits to the gym, “and even though they’d have pools of sweat in them, and smell absolutely disgusting, I’d head off and start punching the nearest bag like crazy.”
Still, when the 7-year-old Kaci pleaded with her parents to start boxing properly in a club, they only relented after Jim’s reassurance to her mother, Hedy, that one real round in the ring would knock any dreams of boxing right out of their daughter’s head.
Well, he was wrong. Very wrong.
Getting ready to head off to Sweden on January 31st for the Golden Girl Championship 2019, we caught up with Kaci this afternoon to find out just how she became so boxing clever…
Now, go give Kaci your vote on the Golden Girl BC poll right here. Now.
