Local Sport Back In The GameJune 25, 2020

As we pull together an A-Z of local businesses and their reopening plans for a post this evening, one gang have found a novel solution around social distancing.
With branches in Kilcoole and Greystones, Nikafit Studios are taking the pod approach to ensuring that their clients are safe and secluded when they open on Monday.
Having already blasted both premises with disinfectant – Nikafit having purchased its own vector fogger – the popular gyms are going one step further to fight the spread of Covid-19, as managing director Niall Mullen explained to RTÉ recently…
“While some gyms are cordoning off sections and setting up Perspex boxes and confined zones,” he explained, “we think that is going to send people running back out of gyms. I know I wouldn’t want to train in an environment like that.”
Followed the guidelines issued by Active Ireland, Mullen notes that they will be operating small group training sessions, with a maximum of four people per group. Members will also have to book their time slot in advance to ensure these safe numbers are kept, but, says Mullen, it will also give the Nikafit staff the ability to keep a detailed log of who has visited the studio.
“There will be a set number of people allowed in any one room and one given time. Our sessions last for 50 minutes, with a 10-minute gap between sessions to allow staff to wipe down the equipment before welcoming in the next group.”
And then there’s the pod system, successfully deployed at South Bay Fitness in Redondo Beach in California last week, and pictured above.
“It is basically a mini gym inside a gym,” says Mullen. “Clients will have their own space and their own equipment, so there will be no sharing of equipment at all. You will have your own squat rack, cardio machine, set of dumbbells or kettlebells, etc…”
