It kinda bugs myself and the bould Max when people dismiss the new harbour off-hand as ugly…
Sure, it’s big, widescreen and there’s a lot of flat white surfaces, but, just as the old John Hinde postcard of a harbour had its own distinct beauty, so does the new John Ford incarnation.
The arguments over who, why, where and how we got here are best left to people who might actually know, but the abundance of bile and banter about this Greystones landmark’s makeover has blinded a lot of people to the simple fact that, hey, the harbour looks pretty darn good right now. And it’s getting better.
Heading down there for a quick stroll with the mighty Gary Paine, beyond the fact that this is now a busy, working harbour, with everyday people happily going about their everyday business, it was unsurprising to discover, being Greystones, the No Fishing and the No Diving signs are being heartily ignored.
I was going to include a shot here of the exasperated harbour master, but, he seemed to have enough on his big plate already.
When I grow up, I’m going to get into that fishing lark down at the harbour too. And a 100th birthday dive would finally give me something to look forward to…

Thanks, GG, for the beautiful photos.
And thoughts.
The harbour saga could go on forever.
But nothing now more delightful than seeing the enjoyment.
People of all ages and degrees of mobility doing things.
Doing things they could never have done before.
Greystones has reclaimed its maritime heritage.
