hen Tigernut was forced to close its doors on March 30th this year, its owners Winnie and Lin were quickly made aware of how much their Charlesland café was loved.
Wave after wave of messages and texts came their way, each letting the couple know that they would be sorely missed.
And that they should find a new home as soon as possible.
“We just didn’t realise how much people cared about us,” says Lin today. “It was overwhelming. And it made us feel so good.
“And determined to find a new home as soon as possible.”
Thankfully, Winnie and Lin have now found a new home, taking over Café Grey, one of the town’s finest little hideaways. And thanks to those fishbowl windows, the perfect spot for a little people watching.
“Café Grey has been here for many years,” says Lin, “and we feel that it’s pretty much perfect as it is. And that means we’re really just going to keep steering this ship straight ahead. We know we’re very lucky to be here…”
Shelley & Barry
Just how lucky became apparent on day one, as Winnie and Lin had problems with deliveries and Barry from Eleven Deli across the road came to the rescue, with a tray full of necessities. “That’s the kind of place Greystones is,” says Lin. “It made that first day so, so joyful…”
Having been opened all those years ago by Caroline Gray, then steered by her sweet sister-in-law Caroline, Cian and Geraldine O’Meadhra took over in July 2019, changing the name from Café Gray to Café Grey. The O’Meadhras having recently decided it was “the right time for us tomove on and concentrate on other interests”, Winnie and Lin were more than ready and more than willing to grab that wheel.
“The timing was perfect,” nods Lin (who, like his wife, is too camera-shy to appear here), “and we just couldn’t believe our luck. So, we jumped at the chance to run this beautiful place.”
With plans to eventually introduce some old favourites from the Tigernut menu, Winnie and Lin have a simple gameplan for Café Grey.
“First and foremost, it’s going to be business as usual, but we also want to bring together the best of both worlds.
“Bring what we have learnt over the years to this perfect little café…”
