Kilcoole Lodge Fails Covid Inspection

Covering the months of February, March, May, June and July, the Health Information And Quality Authority have just published 36 reports on nursing homes.

Of the 36 inspections, the HIQA found evidence of non-compliance in 20 centres.

It was on July 7th that the Kilcoole Lodge Nursing Home became one of those 20 centres, with visiting inspectors observing that staff were not using Personal Protection Equipment in line with national guidelines.

According to RTE, the HIQA’s subsequent report states that staff were not wearing face masks when attending to residents in communal areas, and staff told inspectors they did not always wear a mask when attending to residents’ personal care.

The fact that recent staff resignations had impacted the nursing home – particularly housekeeping – was noted by the HIQA, who went on to state that while the provider was actively recruiting to fill vacancies, the allocation of staff to housekeeping was not in line with the centre’s Covid-19 prevention and contingency plan.

The inspection reports also revealed that Health Protection And Surveillance Centre guidelines around social distancing were not adhered to correctly in all nursing home settings.
