Given the nationwide lockdown on any mass gatherings, it was only a matter of time before our pubs called time too.
In the case of the Byrnes and their Burnaby and Beach House establishments, they had been waiting on word from the HSE on what the best plan of action might be.
But, in the light of a video of a packed pub of Temple Bar revelers currently lighting up social media, they’ve decided to close all their pubs from 8pm this evening, Sunday, March 15th.
We just got confirmation from John Byrne, after having rung The Beach House, and being told that the manager, Terry, was just too busy to come to the phone. Good old Greystones. We had spoken on the phone earlier, and Terry was clearly preparing himself for the shutdown.
We checked with the Horse, and they’re open Sunday night, awaiting an expected government ruling on Monday morning. Left messages with Mrs Robinson, but, haven’t heard back yet.
Part of last night’s social media storm saw Simon Harris TD, the Minister For Health, single out that Twitter post as ‘an insult’ on the efforts of our nurses and doctors currently ‘working to prepare for the impact of the global pandemic’.
The crowd can be heard singing Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline, with its refrain of, ‘Hands, touching hands/Reaching out/Touching me, touching you…’.
Guessing they might be a bunch of Cheltenham Races cnuts celebrating their recent happy travels…
Not far from here, nurses & doctors are working to prepare for the impact of a global pandemic. Everyone is working 24/7. This is an insult to their efforts. There is very clear public health advice. Follow it. All options will be kept under constant review #CoronaVirusUpdates https://t.co/XQvJ7tC13D
