As we all begin to self-isolate in the battle to stop the spread of Covid-19, a local group has sprung up calling on people to allow time for our elderly and vulnerable to shop.
The hours suggested are from 10am to 11am each day, giving those over 70 in the community still keen to look after themselves to do just that.
Bottom line, don’t shop, or they drop. In the end, SuperValu settled on 7am to 9am, and Lidl chose 9am to 11am.
If someone elderly lives near you, let them know that it might be best to go shopping during this daily morning hour. Better still, you can offer to grab their shopping for them.
There are quite a few initiatives in the town already, of course, with Fiona Roche Pharmacy offering to deliver medicine to those unable to travel (or to pick up their prescription whilst still in their car), the bookshops reaching out for those who may now have plenty of time on their hands, and the Holy Rosary broadcasting their daily mass online.
There’s also a new Facebook volunteer group, with over 350 members, ready to lend a hand to those in need.
And talking of the vulnerable, do think of all those neighbours with businesses in the town who may be taking a serious hitright now. Get a takeaway. Grab a gift voucher.
