ow that Andrew has taken a gap year from Cottage Flowers, good news for those who like the sweet smell of homegrown.
Top Of The Hill Flower Farm have set up shop outside AnniePooh’s eco shop on Hillside Road.
You can grab yourself a bouquet of beauties for just €10, happy in the knowledge that these flowers are grown locally.
Well, 7km away. Which is pretty darn local.
Here’s Sheelagh from Top Of The Hill Flower Hill Farm up in sunny Roundwood to explain…
“When I started growing flowers for cutting and selling I had no idea that the vast majority of flowers sold in Ireland are flown here in refrigerated containers from many other countries and they are sprayed with all kinds chemicals to kill pests and prolong vase life.
I want to produce beautiful floral arrangements and seasonal wreaths from my land with zero airmiles, and zero plastic/chemicals or peat. With a large diversity of planting we can also support wildlife.
“Flower farming is hard work but such a joyful process from beginning to end.”
Working as a volunteer for Wicklow Mountain Rescue, Sheelagh plans on dropping flowers to AnniePooh every Thursday and Saturday – unless, of course, she’s called away.
In a fine example of one small business helping another, payment for these freshly-cut flowers goes directly to Sheelagh. Bloom!
