rom a very early age, John Maher was an entrepreneur.
When barely out of short pants, he noticed that his native Wicklow Town didn’t have a paper round.
So, he started one.
Years later, that ambition and hunger for something new was still there, when John opened Wicklow Wok in November last year. Because, you know, he noticed his native Wicklow Town didn’t have a Thai food outlet.
“Not just your typical muesli bars and assorted nuts,” he smiles, “but something that only a gourmet chef could make. Or, when it comes to our crêpes and galettes, we had to get no less than an award-winning Breton chef. Enticed him to up sticks and come live in Wicklow…”
The result is No.5 South Quay down in the increasingly hip and happening Wicklow Town. “This is the cool quarter,” laughs John, pointing out that soul diva Mia Parsons has just opened up a block down, and that “Sammy The Seal wouldn’t be seen mooching fresh fish anywhere else…”
And just to prove that John believes in going above and beyond, his Sanremo coffee machine is designed by a former Italian Formula 1 driver. And it costs €14,000. “Hey, it looks amazing,” laughs John. “More importantly, it makes wonderful coffee…”
For those who like their superfood in the comfort of their own homes, as well as e-bike deliveries within 5 or 6 miles of Wicklow itself, one day a week, John is offering Greystonians a chance to order and collect. You just have to download the No.5 South Quay app here, and then order your delicious, nutritious, freshly-prepared salad before 10.30am on Friday for a 1pm collection at the Wicklow Wok trailer in The Boat Yard Gallery.
There’s 10% off your first order through the app, and after every 10 orders, the 11th comes free.

In the meantime, we caught up with John this afternoon down in a cleary re-energised Wicklow Town to find out who, what, where, when, how, huh…?
