atest press release from Simon Harris TD, issued on Tuesday, June 1st 2021…

Wicklow Fine Gael Minister Simon Harris TD along with his Wicklow Town colleague Cllr Irene Winters has asked Wicklow County Council to avail of the opportunity to purchase the land for sale adjacent to Magheramore Beach.

Minister Harris said: “I have been contacted by a considerable number of Wicklow residents requesting the council acquire the lands for sale at auction next month next to Magheramore beach.

These lands have no use as development land, but if publicly acquired, could facilitate much needed carpark and direct pedestrian access for users of the beach”.

Cllr Irene Winters said: “Magheramore is a beautiful sandy beach and a real asset to the county. The popularity of the beach is matched only by the traffic chaos that ensues on a sunny day, particularly if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday.

It would be wonderful if the council could buy the land to ensure that access to the beach is maintained for the public. If the council purchased the land it would also be possible to put in a hard core rough carpark above the beach which would alleviate the traffic difficulties and make the whole area safer for all road users.

Land not used for access or a carpark could then be sold or leased as agricultural land”.

Minister Harris and Cllr Winters have contacted the CEO of Wicklow County Council regarding this proposal and the council management have agreed to examine the possibility of purchasing the land for sale.

P.S. To ease road parking, a local landowner has agreed to provide parking at Magheramore. So, respect it.
