My Delgany Days With Shay #2: The Golfing Legends

aving finally managed to pin down Delgany’s frankest and funniest long-term resident last week, we here at GG were delighted to see so much love being unleashed for the man as soon as our chat appeared.

Sitting on a park bench, up on Bellevue Hill in Delgany, just a few feet away from his family home, Shay Clear gave us his own particular take on local history. And Muslim cows.

As that wave of love washed over Shay, unsurprisingly, given that there’s pretty much always one, we got a lone and no doubt lonely email complaining about our chilled-out chinwag.

It would be unfair to name the complainer, of course, so, let’s just called him Besmond Bunne. Besmond felt that we should have just let Shay talk by himself, rather than having a two-way conversation with the man. Besmond felt so strongly about this THAT HE USED CAPITALS TO GET HIS POINT ACROSS.

Which always goes down well, no matter what you’re argument. Naturally, we told Besmond to go forth and multiply.

Having said that, his angry email did inspire us this week to let Shay go full jazz on his riffs, interrupting him only when he seemed to be going way off-key.

And off-planet.

It meant that our planned 5-minute conversation – Shay showing us his impressive oil paintings before recounting how two legends of the golfing world grew up just a few doors apart on Bellevue Hill – went on for just a few seconds short of 25 minutes.

Thanks for that, BESMOND! Ya feckin’ feck of a feck.
