Given just how much coffee this town consumes, it’s a shame that most people haven’t yet quite figured out a way to avoid the dreaded takeaway cup.
And what’s equally surprising is how even the neo-hippies and the pseudo gentry like to leave them lying around the town, as though they might just sink back into the soil from which they came.
Only our disposable cups don’t grow out of the ground. They’re manufactured. Heavily.
Which is why a bunch of transition year students from Temple Carrig School will be visiting local businesses and schools, etc, over the coming week to carry out a survey on the takeaway cup.
Whilst finding out the tea and coffee habits of your average Greystonian, the plan is to convince not only those businesses and schools but also Joe and Joanna Sixpack that reusable and biodegradable cups make far more sense.
Part of the Greystones Tidy Town’s Every Cup Counts campaign, the hope is to make Greystones the first town in Ireland to have only reusable and biodegradable cups on offer.
To help that goal, the Tidy Towns gang have their own blue & grey reusable cups available in various coffee shops around the town over the next couple of days, going for the very reasonable price of €8 a pop.
The gang have also set up an Every Cup Counts website – check it here – which will point you in the right direction. In the meantime, you can get involved by getting in touch with firstname.lastname@example.org.
While we have you there, the latest shout-out for a Tidy Towns clean-up is Big Pre-Spring Clean-Up on Saturday, February 10th, with everyone meeting at the South Beach Car Park at 10am. Then, on Monday 12th, there’s a meeting at Greystones Lawn Tennis Club at 7.30pm, with everyone and anyone with ideas on how to make Greystones Tidy Town bigger, better, stronger and more effective welcome to come along.
