iven that the brothers Crampton have been delivering perfect pop thrills for the past few years, it seems only logical that they should have finally taken on the Mount Everest of the three-minute ditty.

Namely, the much-loved, much-feared and mucho-lucrative Christmas single.

From Bing’s White Christmas to Shane’s black & blue Christmas Eve, there are some truly magical and wonderfully evocative Yuletide songs out there. And there are, of course, thousands upon thousands of dreck the hall monstrosities too.

Jumping into the fray in December 2020 was Christmas Without You, the latest offering from Mute The TV, a busman’s holiday of a band for these always-busy, forever-jamming siblings.

“It does take a certain amount of bravery, and a little madness, to take on the Christmas single,” nods Dylan, the younger of this band of brothers, “and that just adds to the challenge. It’s akin to shooting from one goal mouth and hoping the ball will wing its way into the back of the net in the opposite goal mouth. So, naturally, with those kinds of odds, we just couldn’t resist…”

Having come up with the chorus as a family Christmas present when he was 12, Elliot is clearly a fan of the genre. “Given that, as you said, there have been some wonderful Christmas songs, we just thought that if we wrote something that we’d both like to hear – which has always been our game plan – then it can only be joyful…”

And, as it turns out, bountiful, given that the lads’ Yuletide offering single raised a mighty €600 for Childline. Which is darned impressive, given that it was available for just €1.
