Talks between Western Building Systems and the Department Of Education over the delayed opening of the Greystones Community National School are expected to last between three and six months.
That’s according to a source close to the conciliation efforts, which were first mooted in November.
The expected handover of the school by Western Building Systems to the Department during the summer has been on hold over a fire safety issue.
Last month, the developers said they asked for a conciliation process to be put in place to resolve the issue which they have claimed could be ‘sorted within 24 hours’.
The hold-up in the opening of the new school has meant that the primary pupils have been forced to remain in prefabs on the grounds of Greystones Rugby Club. It has also had a knock-on effect for secondary pupils of the newly-formed Greystones Community College, who were meant to be sharing the new school, but who are now housed in the nearby Greystones Tennis Club.
Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly welcomed the news that there was now an end in sight to the dispute.
“In a perfect world this issue could have been resolved a lot sooner,” he said. “I know there is immense frustration amongst the parents that their children are not in their new state-of-the-art school. But we are finally starting to see some progress, which has to be welcomed.
“I have been in constant contact with the Department to try and help speed things along, and I will continue to work closely with both schools and the Department to try and get this issue dealt with once and for all.”
