School’s Healthy Eating Programme Plastic-Wrapped

Press release from Green Party Councillor Lourda Scott, issued on Friday, July 26th 2019…

Green Party Councillor for the Greystones Municipal District, Lourda Scott has delivered a petition of nearly 2,400 signatures to Bord Bia calling for the ban of single-use plastic for a school’s healthy eating programme.

Scott says, “The Food Dudes programme sends 450,000 plastic wrapped portions of fruit and vegetables to 800 primary schools across the country, including over 70 schools in Co Wicklow. This volume of plastic packaging is set to increase with 2,100 schools estimated to participate over the next three years.

“It’s unacceptable that we teach our children about sustainability, yet in practice demonstrate the direct opposite. We have seen from the recent School Climate Strikes in Greystones and Bray that our children are very concerned about the future of the planet and are acutely aware that our seas are being choked by plastic waste. By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans. As a coastal county, this is particularly troubling, and we have a duty to do as much as we can to prevent more plastic entering the marine environment.”

The type of soft plastic used in the healthy eating initiative is no longer accepted for recycling and is binned once used.

“Since I launched this campaign,” finishes Scott, “it is very evident that people want change. Bord Bia has said that it is constantly reviewing Food Dudes.

“I hope that this year they will listen to the thousands of people who signed this petition and make the switch to alternative or no packaging for next year’s programme.”
