St Catherine’s Fintastic Fundraiser

rganised by Bray mum of six Kirsty McKenna when she saw the positive effect a fish tank at home had on her son, Mathis, there’s a different kind of fundraiser happening right now.

In the hope that Mathis and the rest of the kids at St Catherine’s Special School in Newcastle can experience the calm that comes with watching fish go about their daily slow-motion business.

“We heard a few years back that aquariums are very soothing for neurodivergent people,” explains Kirsty. “So, we invested in a large fish tank. This is a game changer. When Mathis is overwhelmed, we bring him to his fish tank, and he instantly feels calmer…”

The fact that Mathis has also spent hours laughing and clapping as he watches his fantastic friends duck and dive convinced Kirsty and her partner, Michael Meredith, that St Catherine’s needed just such a box of wonder too.

So far, the couple have raised almost half of their €3,000 goal. And you can help them hit that sweet target by donating right here. The sensory fish tank will be in memory of Val Fennell, for all the great work he has done for St Catherine’s over the past 40 years…
