Green Party TD Deputy Steven Matthews took part in a site visit with the National Broadband Ireland team in Kilcoole last week and received an in person update on broadband rollout.
Deputy Matthews said, “ I was delighted to meet the National Broadband Ireland team to discuss the supply of high speed broadband across County Wicklow.
“I met with the project managers and installation teams in the Kilcoole network area to look at various aspects of this huge scale project. The scale and complexity of running 1000s of kilometres of fibre optic cables to every premises in Wicklow is matched by a high standard of installation, mapping and future proofing of the system.
“There is no substitute for fibre optic cable, it is the ‘gold standard’ in terms of communications cables. I am confident that its connection to every premises in Wicklow will provide the highest speed communication network for every business, home entertainment and educational need as we become more reliant and invested in a digital economy.
“As a member of the Oireachtas committee on Transport & Communications I have met several times with the National Broadband team for updates on progress across Wicklow and this was my first opportunity to carry out site visits. As someone with previous experience of cable networks I can see that this job is complex but is being carried out to a very high standard. This communication network will provide the very best of service across the county and provide those in rural areas with better broadband than most urban areas.
“I will continue my meetings on the ground with NBI to ensure the entire Wicklow installation is done in a timely manner and that high speed broadband is available to every home and business as soon as possible.”
