And that’s not to mention all the fireworks (there’s a lad up Kindlestown way who’ll sort you out, nay bother), the fancy dress parties and all that trick or treating.
Sadly, just like 2020, Greystones’ spookfest 2021 is also proving to be, well, complete and utter boo sheet. Once again, Halloween is going to be a little bit quieter this year.
Still, there are a few ghoulish Greystones goodies on offer. And to make sure you have fun without being dumb, Greystones gardaí have even issued a handy guide.
In 2020, Brian ‘The Grim Squeaker’ Donnelly found alternative ways to get your spook on, including a parade, a fire-breathing display and a Pumpkin Pageant. This year, due to an outbreak of laziness, it’s just the Pumpkin Pageant, with display tables on Hillside Road, on the greens at Seagreen and Applewood Heights, and at the entrance to The Burnaby estate opposite Shoreline.
In the meantime, if you’d like to make your neighbours green with envy this Halloween, you should check out Pumpkins By Pip. You can explore the wicked woman’s work here – and book your perfect pumpkin creation by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Keeping it local – and loco – Saran B Dance & Fitness have pretty much sold out their Halloween dance camp from October 25th to 29th, as has Paula Hanrahan’s Kids Club Ireland shindig from the 25th to the 29th. Not sure about Deirdre Doyle’s Cool Food School online cooking class on the 30th at 11am, as she hasn’t gotten back to us. Yet.
Oh, and don’t forget there’s the week-long Halloween Fun at the all-conquering, all-seeing, all-business Killruddery House. Gulp.
For the football-crazy kids, there’s the Modern Legacy Halloween Football Camp, running from Monday 25th to Friday 29th, 10am to 2pm daily. Check it out right about here.
Also running from the 25th to the 29th is the Greystones United AFC’s October Camp, 10am to 2pm each day, for kids aged 6 to 12. It’s €65 for the week, details here.
If you like the idea of your kid mixing their brains with their brawn, there’s always the Mathletics Halloween Camp. Aimed at 6-to-12-year-olds, Mathletics 1-Day Halloween Camp hits the Greystones Éire Óg GAA Club on Friday, October 29th, running from 10am to 3.30pm, and costing just €35 for the full 5½ hours. If that doesn’t fit your jet-set lifestyle, there’s Rathnew Soccer Club from October 26th to 28th, 10am to 2pm, costing €55 for the three days.
And should you be more interested in treats this year than tricks, TheDivine Foodie have put together a Hallowe’en Spooky Chocolate Fondue hampers, spooktacular Halloween cupcakesand something for the hairy, scary adults too. That should keep any hunger games firmly at bay.
And for the kids, those clever Jordans over at Sweet Boutique have just introduced The Boo Box. Which should just about keep ’em happy. Until November 1st.
Oh, and when you’re down de town, don’t forget to check out award-winning illustrator PJ Lynch’s Haunted Bookshop window in Halfway Up The Stairs. Just remember to wear your brown trousers.
For the whole family, there’s always Wicklow’s Historical Gaol, their tours and fright nights hopefully back in time for Halloween night, whilst over at Glenroe Farm in spooky Kilcoole, they’ve got their Spooky Maize Maze plus The Haunted Cottage. Happening October 23rd to 25th and the 30th and 31st from 10am to 5pm, grab your tickets here.
There’s also Kilcoole’s Retro Drive-In Cinema, who have set up shop in Leopardstown for a bunch of Halloween goodies, including Hocus Pocus, Jurassic Park and Labyrinth. Detailshere.
And should you like a little help with making your own Halloween wreath, you’re in luck. There’s a free online course happening on October 29th, 11.30am to 1pm – find out more here.
As to the traditional trick or treat, as we wait for the official guidelines from the HSE, we reckon it’s going to be nigh on impossible to maintain that six-feet distance here. Some housing estates in Greystones have opted for putting a sheet of white paper in their front windows to signal that you’re happy to have trick or treaters call. Or you can just follow Kim Shanley’s smart advice from 2020, listed above.
In the meantime, as with previous years, send your finest Halloween costumes – in pics, or short videos – or scares email@example.com, and we’ll gather them all together for a big Halloween night Gallery of Greystones Ghouls.
Yep, that’s Greystones’ own Nylophone, getting into the Halloween spirit. Now, go check out The Whale’s outdoor screening of The Shining at the old abandoned La Touche Hotel here.
