t’s always difficult to know what to say to someone who has just lost a loved one…
You can always try a few traditional words of comfort, letting them know just how much their dearly departed will be missed.
Then again, maybe a little borrowed philosophy about this notoriously mortal coil might help bring a little perspective into the equation.
Always look on the bright side of death, and all that. As the late, great W.C. Fieldsquipped, it’s a funny old world, and you’d be lucky to get out of it alive. When it came to the big farewell, Sir Woody of Allen famously said that he wasn’t afraid of dying, he just didn’t want to be there when it happened, whilst an anonymous London graffiti artist of the late ’70s perhaps said it best when he sprayed ‘Death is just nature’s way of telling you to slow down’.
Which all goes to prove that you have to hold on to your sense of humour when dealing with the final curtain, embracing all the joyous, triumphant and plain ol’ silly moments that makes up a life well lived.
May all such happy memories flood over those who knew and loved the friends we have lost…
