here does the time go? It seems like only seventy years ago that they started pimping up Greystones’ old Victorian harbour…
In truth, the work has been going on since 2008. And then it stopped. For eight years.
Eight long, harrowing, burrowing, banging, clanging, whingeing years.
There’s light at the end of the pier though, with work steaming ahead over the past two years, that groovy public square now open for business, and a 16-acre public park due to be ready for 2019. (Brace yourselves – when unveiled in 2020, that park turned out to be a glorified gravel path and a dog’s dinner.)
Naturally, there’s still some way to go before some Greystonians are going to love this particular patch of their old hometown as much as they did the old harbour, but, it hardly needs to be said, there’s little to be gained by those involved to construct something ugly and unfriendly – and, hey, the old harbour may never fade away, but it is gone. Forever.
So, there’s no use in crying over spilt concrete. As a town, we have so very little left to lose down at the harbour – and so, so much to gain. Especially when they seem to be getting it right.
Here’s hoping these occasional videos below – charting the progress down at the new harbour from 2016 onwards – act as a reminder of how we got from there to here.
In the meantime, if you need a nostalgia kick, you can check out the old harbour here.
And before we head off down this time tunnel, take a look at this groovy 2017 time-lapse video of just how a Marina Village house is put together…Â
