No good will come from having a casino and gaming emporium in our community. It is completely profit-focussed and will only bring negatives to our community.
Sweeney’s FRI3FEB23
ress release from concerned Greystones harbour residents, issued on
Friday, February 3rd 2023…
News of a casino and gambling emporium opening at Joe Sweeney’s Takeaway seemed to have gone unnoticed by the vast majority of people living in Greystones.
In December a company by the name of Muiralan Limited
renewed a gaming licence for Joe Sweeney’s Takeaway allowing for gambling on the premises. The gaming licence was granted by Bray District Court on December 19th and allows for 50 gaming machines to be located at the takeaway and for opening hours of 10am to 2am, seven days a week.
The new owners of Joe Sweeney’s are not local. The owners are Muiralan Limited, a company involved in the gaming and casino business.
Mr. Alan Muir, owner of Joe Sweeney’s, is also a director of Expo Casinos that operate supersized 24-hour casinos operating in Tallaght and Santry. [Editor’s note: Alan Muir’s solicitors have sent documentation to confirm their client resigned this position in July 2019]
Now that we have application approved for 50 gambling machines, including a roulette table, and opening from 10am to 2am, every person in Greystones needs to take notice. This is only the beginning.
The location of the casino is a public health risk to our community and should be stopped now. The location
poses particular heightened risk to vulnerable members of our community, to the large number of teenagers and young impressionable children.
The casino and gaming emporium is within 10 minutes walking
distance of our major schools – St David’s NS, St Brigid’s NS, St Patrick’s NS, St Kevin’s NS, Temple Carrig School and St Laurence’s NS.
It is beside the Coolnagreina Centre currently housing over 120 Ukrainian refugees.
It is within 400 metres of the Tiglin Centre at the Cove. The Tiglin Centre provides hugely important care, rehabilitation and support services for men recovering from drug, alcohol and gambling addiction.
It is also beside the newly-opened Greystones Youth Café, which plays such a vital role in enabling Greystones’ youth to connect with each other and build relationships with the wider community.
According to the Department of Health, Ireland has in the region of 40,000 people aged 15 and over with gambling problems.
The problem gambling prevalence rate among male students in Ireland aged 15-16 is double the rate of the general population. Sadly, 1 in 5 people with gambling problems attempt suicide – more than
double to figure of other addictions.
We all need to know the full facts of what is being planned…
• What is the status of the gaming licence and proposed use?
• Why has Muiralan Limited or Alan Muir not engaged with residents and the local community?
• The casino operation is directly opposite the Marina residential community. What risk assessment has been completed in relation to antisocial behaviour and privacy?

To the concerned parents in greystones. The court application for the gaming licence was advertised last Dec. Concerned parents should read their local paper as it gives local news which is fact based and not gossip on the net. While I like to have a drink in the local pubs, I have on numerous occasions observed many an adult male and female wiping remnants of white power from their nostrils as the leave the toilets , I’m quite sure a lot of these adults would be parents of teenagers, I can’t help but wonder are these concerned parents. Are yous not giving money to the biggest cartel in Europe the kinnahins..so maybe in future stay sober and clean and read the newspapers..when the concerned parents are eating a camile takeaway from the main St not only are you supporting a local business but a vast franchise of over 45 eateries internationally. How about your favourite Chinese are the fa.ily run or do they have triad links??.how about your local tesco, ever wonder how Israel has a booming economy with a state of the art army, in the middle of a desert, is it from selling oranges, no, its because tesco is a Jewish company and all Jewish companies send money back to the mother land to finance the economy, so the few Bob you spend in tesco kills little kiddies in Palestine, are you still concerned parents now?,how about the booze you buy which pays for alcohol advertisements t your kid see,how about the cheap clothes you buy on line, made in sweat shops by children’s young as 4yrs old working 8hr days for 50c a day, still concerned??how a out paddypowers are they not international with 600 shops, why not close them down or do yous like a little flutter on the gi gi s when the grand national is on a nd watch the races while betting on your phones, sipping your cocktails and snorting another line of coke.,still feeling concerned?? And for us that like to reminisce of times gone by we should reminisce, I for one reminisce about the pig n a poke we were all sold by wicklow co.council and the developers of the marina,,where’s the hotel that was supposed to be built down there, where’s the state of the art health care center that was to be built down there? Is that where the magic 11 acres appeared from that the council sold to the developers? To the people that have fears, tell me of an occasion where there has been drunkeness, violence and drug taking at the casinos in bray, wicklow or courtown….I haven’t seen any application for a liquor licence so I take it that there won’t be any alcohol sold on the premises ,aren’t casinos over 18s anyway.?.To the people that know people that have a gambling problem under the age of 18 did the problem start with slot machines or gambling on their phones..to the people that want this not to go ahead, just think, we ve been denied the choice of going to McDonald’s and now yous want to deny us that are over 18 the choice to play a few slots, would have thought in 2023 in a modern society that being aloud a choice is a common practice,..So with all that said we should close all the pubs, Chinese takeaways, tesco, camile and bookies and yous should all stop being hypocrites,
Good grief
Very sorry greystonian, that comment was meant for Tara Jones, apologies
Do they not need planning permission for a change of use?
Hi Rita, we are trying to stop this. Please come to the town meeting at Thursday and support the community. 7.30 PM at Patrick’s School. All the schools, local charities and concerned parents are supporting.
The owners of this place seem like complete cowboys. I assume that all of the positive comments about this are from friends and family of the owners as there will be no positives to the local community from this casino.
I genuinely don’t understand how comments below which reminisce about how wonderful “old” greystones was ,can in the same breath welcome a multi million pound gambling organisation that will only take us further away from that local community and spirit that is remembered so fondly.
This casino is not on a par with the old Sweeneys machines(despite them trying to sell it to us as such) so let’s look at what they’re selling us now and see what will it really bring to Greystones and do we want it for our towns future.
For me that’s a sure NO
Greystones didn’t fight off mc Donald’s, local shops ant eateries petitioned the council once they knew some people were behind them, why not give kids a packed lunch instead of money when going to school,,go into lidls at lunch time or after school and look at the rubbish the kids buy to eat,, there s also the damage to the environment that nimbus like yourself s have caused, now we have to make a return journey to bray to buy a delicious juicy burger and fries .
Where in my comment did I mention food or McDonald’s or who petitioned to stop them? Casinos and fast food restaurants are clearlydifferent issues.
My point is there are comments here about how wonderful ‘old greystones ‘ was and yet the same voices want an out of town investor to run a casino here…as if it would add to our community…The mind boggles.
I have seen the impact that gambling can have on young people. It can be devastating. This will be disastrous for the area.
PUBLIC MEETING, Thursday Feb 9th @ 19:30 in St. Patrick’s School. Come and hear the facts on the UK&I Casino agency (Expo Casino) hoping to set up imminently without engaging the local community.
I am all for the old sweeneys local arcade however the new plans are completely at odds with the historic use of the premises. Most of us would not object to a few gaming arcade machines and a few pool tables and would welcome such for our youth . Don’t be fooled. The premises is no longer locally owned but owned by a gambling organisation worth over €40 million with no ties to Greystones! Gambling is twice as addictive as other vices and to extend to a casino will have a negative effect on Greystones, it’s citizens and it’s values. The only winners in this are the gambling organisation! The false narrative that this is just the old sweeneys is insulting at best but Greystones fought off McDonald’s and will make a stand against a casino which will only destroy peoples lives if allowed to proceed! Please attend the public meeting on Thursday to hear from families whose lives have been destroyed due to gambling and casinos! Hear from parents who are concerned about the future plans!
Is not every business in greystones profit focused. Are these n,I,m,b,y,s the same people that denied us mc Donald’s, fishing rights for our local Fisher people, deny us to have cheaper shops,,why not close the pub and coffee shops,as the cause more damage to public health than a few slots,, aren t casinos over 18s,,these scare mongers should camp out side the casinos in bray ,wicklow and courtown for a few nights and then post their opinions about druggies drinkers and disorder, greystones is already fckd with all the new comers to our once peaceful village, a village where people had time for each other and had road manners,,why don’t these rejectors put their energy in looking for pot hole free roads,,most affluent part of wicklow has the worst roads in the country,,give greystones back to the people,,,remember the wheat field, the sound of cock pheasants and curlews, greenfields getting a great bargain in pat or John flynns, sweets in scuffles, best deli in muffins cough your lungs up in Murphy s when buying your smokes, free tennis opposite the latouche, soccer pitches without fences, being able to cross the main St without barriers, bon fires and drinking sessions on the south beach when people used to take home their empties and rubbish, being able to walk up the main st suck in the fresh salty air instead of smelly greasy food and side stepping dog shit the days we could swim in the harbour sit against the upturned boats eating our chips and ice cream and sheltering under the two sided bus shelter, long live Joe’s long live Joe’s should be the cries of the people when the stand on the pavements when the parade passes by on the 17th.
great informative piece Paul..Thank you.
gambling online 24/ 7 is already an issue. Having often enjoyed a local brekkie in Joes..( as it was) the ‘ Slot machines’ .were always in the back of the cafe…& a lot of ” people” used them. however..escalating this..to a,full on Casino,,or any kind of Gambling can only be detrimental .

Gambling is a serious and growing threat to the well-being of young people in Ireland. With every premier league team being sponsored by a gambling company, it is no wonder why our youth are becoming increasingly exposed to this dangerous vice. The evidence is overwhelming and clear: gambling is linked to a multitude of psychological, social, and financial problems. Studies have shown a strong correlation between adolescent gambling behavior and negative consequences, and some even indicate that certain individuals are at a higher risk of developing problem gambling.
We also have Tiglin in close proximity with residents in recovery from gambling addictions.
As alarming as this may be, the situation is only getting worse. In the past 5 years, gambling among teenagers and young men has skyrocketed, with reports of a fourfold increase. In light of these facts, it is imperative that we do not add fuel to the fire by allowing a casino to be built in close proximity to schools, where children will be exposed to its normalizing influence from a young age. We cannot afford to let gambling become a part of our youth’s daily life and contribute to the erosion of their mental health.
Just had a look at your Linkedin, Justin. Would you not care to mention that you were an “Owner of multiple race horses” between the years of 2006-14 in your commentary on the dangers of gambling? Do you think that we should close down The Beach House and Dann’s due to their close proximity to Tiglin? Do you think that we should confiscate smart phones from the residents of Tiglin, thus denying them access to the world of 24/7 online gambling?
Maybe the residents of the marina should stop hiding behind the pretense of protecting the vulnerable and actually say why they really don’t want the casino on their expensive doorstep.
Hi Andrew, thanks for the interest.
I am also from Santry, as you interested, that’s where I grew up. That’s where the one of the other massive casinos being backed by these investors is based.
The owners and investors of the proposed casino in Greystones have already established two large casinos in Santry and Tallaght. They are not local business owners but rather property speculators and professional casino operators. They own multiple connected companies. The company behind the project was established in 2019 specifically for this purpose. The proposed casino is not just a small establishment with a few slot machines and a pool table.
The opposition to the casino is not aimed at anyone (other than the investors, we know who they are), and at the negative impact this can have on the community. The residents of Santry (I grew up there), including my sister’s family and my mother, have already seen the damage caused by similar casinos.
The intention is to expand Sweeney’s, but if the proposal is just for a few gaming machines, then alternative options such as arcade games and a pool table would be more suitable for the community, particularly for teenagers and locals. Why not hand back the gambling licence and make a go of the chipper, a pool hall and computer games arcade. We would all back that.
The concern is not about the presence of an arcade, chipper, or pool hall, but rather about a major consortium entering the community to build a 24/7 365 days Casino.
There will be a town meeting on Thursday at 7:30 PM at St Patricks School, where the backers of the project will be welcomed to attend and explain their interest in opening a casino in the town.
Yes, I did own race horses, I have gambled, and I am not against it. I am against it between three schools.
Why not compromise and put in arcades (non gambling) and snooker tables? There is a meeting on Thursday at 7.30pm in St Patrick’s school. Sign the petition . We just passed 1600 signatures. Growing daily.
I am totally against this to be brought to our community .. cant imagine a casino at the enterace of a residential area.. imagine all the young ones .. vulnerable people with addiction get access to this? Drunk people will be seen on our streets, fights , crimes .. we dont want to encoruge unhealthy behaviours .. the youth are suffering so much from medias, phones dont bring this as well and destroy their lives… if you want a casino you can go to an area away from people homes ..again totally opposing this
” Drunk people will be seen on our streets, fights , crimes .. we dont want to encoruge unhealthy behaviours ”
The casino will not have license to serve alcohol. Maybe you should raise your issue of concern with the proprietors of The Beach House and Dann’s.
I for one think we do NOT need this type of activity for our wonderful community. Please don’t encourage gambling. It’s not healthy
Greystones already has a bookies. And every single person with a smart phone has access to gambling 24/7.
So the issue of addiction and anti-social behaviour is of concern to the residents of the sanctity that is the marina estate. Well in that case why not call for The Beach House and Dann’s to be closed.
Or is it that the clientele of these two establishments is of a certain calibre of citizenry — one that befits Greystones.
It wouldn’t be the case that the marina dwellers are a tad bit cautious of an outsider element entering their enclave, would it? Let us not forget that a high premium was payed to guarantee membership to this guilded middle class community.
So who is the feared outlier? The smelly fish? No, that’s another matter altogether.
It is people from a different background. A different socio-economic background. Working class people.
By the way, the great destruction that befell this country in 2008-09 was caused by out of control bank lending and a property bubble — gambling: white collar gambling.
Oh, and let’s not forget. The vast majority of people in Greystones were vehemently opposed to the marina development in the first place.
Andrew, or Paul maybe, ridiculous I don’t live in marina village, but I don’t want it either. By the way, I grew up here, as did my parents. People like you who think you have some sort of ownership of the town because you have been here for a while embarrass me.
As a parent, I am appalled at this opening up in our community…. we have a drug epidemic on our streets as it is without providing the perfect place for dealing. I have personally witnessed the damage that gambling addictions cause to families… no, no, no, we can’t let this happen on our watch
This is an appallingly dangerous – socially and morally – scam proposal. A gambling and slots den disguised with kiddies fun rides, ice cream and chips. Open from 10am to 2am in the morning! 7-days per week. Beside the only public toilets in the harbour. Nearby the local schools, the Youth Cafe and Tiglin. One must wonder what the promoters real plan is?
I assume that this is Dermod Dwyer, chairman of the Greystones town team, making this comment on the ‘socially and morally’ suspect nature of the gambling industry. The wording in your comment here matches up with a comment made on another platform.
Care to mention your past chairmanship of Setanta Sports? Setanta Sports was a facilitator of the gambling industry. Among the broadcasts was horse racing. What about SetantaBet, an online gaming service for customers within Ireland which was launched during your chairmanship.
As the title suggests, there’s only one winner to a casino opening in a residential neighborhood full of kids and cliff walkers. It’s not the community or it’s residents…
I a totaled against gambling.again I’d go as far as saying its Mario part of scan. As carina of it against fishing men. It a l
Clan. Backed up with council. Ower tds don’t even put up a fight. Time they got of theare ass.
Hope it goes ahead. Something new at last for the town.
Andrew, you clearly have some interest in that business as you are going to great lengths to counter valid arguments. There will be no community benefit from this casino. I have been in this type of establishment before, and they are full of scum bags and wierdos.
