A Grand view on Trafalgar Road 1950. Colourised by GG.
s the old photos just keep on coming, we’re going through all our archives, in the hope of making them stronger, safer, sexier, and, most importantly, easier
to use.
By having the likes of the harbour, the people, our neighbours and all the other sub-categories blessed with their own pages, it makes it far easier for you, the lazy-ass reader, to find the
specific time-travelling rabbit hole that you’re looking for.
And so it is with this archive of our roads, lanes and dirt tracks.
You can tell a lot about a place by the main street it keeps, and to
see the gradual evolution of Church Road over the years, as buildings increased and trees sadly, if inevitably, decreased, there’s a town growing and growing.
And seeing the people on these roads – these exiles and
ghosts on main street – is revealing too. And heartwarming. These streets belonged to them, just as they now belong to us, and will one day belong to the next generation. And so it goes on, and on…
Let us take you down.
And then left…
And then right, down by the black flag, and on again, up over that humpback bridge…
