The initial plan was to have a quick interview with Fiore and Anna Vecchio, to capture how their week has been since announcing Pineto’s closure last Wednesday.
That 22 years in Greystones will come to a close on Saturday, September 22nd has brought forth a lot love to the Vecchio clan over the last six days.
And it shows no signs of abating, our planned video chat constantly interrupted by hugs from well-wishers, emotional laments from regulars over favourite dishes, and the lady of the house, Anna, welling up as she prepares to say goodbye to her second home.
For Fiore, running a chipper was pretty much in his blood, his father having popped him up at the counter to help serve the customers when he was just four years old. Today, Fiore needs that counter a little more to prop himself up, his legs only allowing him three to four hours of standing before the pain becomes too much.
“It’s better that we say goodbye now,” he smiles, “while we’re still in good health, and while we still have a business here in Greystones that we’re very proud of. This way, people will actually miss us…”
And how. The big farewell will be this Saturday, and we’ll hopefully get to have our video chat with Fiore, Anna, Bruna, Dario and the rest of the gang then.
In the meantime, as you might have guessed from his rockin’ good looks, Fiore’s a lifelong fan of The King, and is therefore the special guest on Wednesday night for The Whale’s 50th anniversary screening of Elvis: ’68 Comeback Special. Boom!
Just in case you’d like to join the man for a farewell scoop. Or two.
