It was shortly after learning that her author husband, Axel Jensen, had abandoned both her and their young son for another woman that Marianne Ihren first met Leonard Cohen.
The two were almost young, and were soon living together on the Greek island of Hydra.
This is where the teenage Ihren had come with her teenage husband, much to the disapproval of her parents, he writing his poems and novels whilst Marianne looked after their child and their home.
And that was pretty much how life was for these new lovers, as Marianne quickly became Cohen’s muse too, inspiring some of the finest songs on the poet-turned-songwriter’s first two albums, Songs Of Leonard Cohen (1967) and Songs From A Room (1969). Songs thatincluded Bird On The Wire and, of course, So Long, Marianne, for, just like Axel, Leonard too would abandon Marianne. For Susanne. Truly, that’s no way to say goodbye…
