Having a coastal pathway all the way from Greystones to Wicklow town is, of course, something of a no-brainer.
So much so, Wicklow County Council included just such a path in their 2016 development plans.
Only trouble was, that fine idea sat, untouched, on a WCC shelf for the following year. And quite a bit of the year after that too.
It was an online petition created last month by the East Coast Greenway group that finally fanned that flickering flame, with 8,600 signatures gathered in just four weeks.
Suddenly, their chairman was sitting down to talk over the idea with Simon Harris TD. And just this week, Wicklow County Council have appointed project management consultants WS Atkins to conduct a feasibility study on the greenway, their findings due in November.
So, it’s all systems go for our yellow brick road. The fact that this eco-friendly path will be accessible not only to pedestrians and cyclists but wheelchair users too means that the East Coast Greenway is going to bring joy to a lot of people.
And it’s also going to bring a lot more joyous people to our towns. Hurrah!
We caught up with Ciaran this morning, to find out more. The battery fainted just before the end, but, hey, we weren’t talking about Greystones, so, all good…
